Here are a few ideas for service-learning projects to address issues that affect immigrants and immigration:

Register new citizens to vote. New citizens take the oath of allegiance to the United States at ceremonies held throughout the year. Check with your county's Registrar-Recorder or County Clerk's office to find out the date and location of the next ceremony and go down to witness people becoming U.S. citizens. Since voting is a right enjoyed by birth citizens and naturalized citizens alike, you can register any eligible naturalized citizens who have reached the age of 18. With the proper forms and instruction from your county government, you can even help them register immediately after they have taken the oath of allegiance.

Create a Survey. Also called an opinion poll, a survey is comprised of questions you can pose to members of your community regarding something that concerns them. You could ask for their proposals and ideas for immigration reform. Your survey group can be selected from the entire city, or just from your neighborhood or school, depending on the answers you are trying to find. For guidance in formulating and conducting effective opinion polls, CRF's Civic Action Guide provides detailed instructions.

Create a resource guide for others. Investigate the non-profits, businesses, political leaders, activists, and others who are themselves involved in work surrounding immigration. Create a guide with their descriptions and contact information to be used at schools, religious institutions, or community centers.
